A new trick for deodorizing cat litter: Baking soda usage guide and effectiveness evaluation

Baking soda can be placed in cat litter, but attention should be paid to the operation method and potential impact.

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), as a common cleaning agent, has a certain deodorizing effect. Placing it in cat litter can absorb moisture and odors, thereby helping to reduce the negative odors in the litter box. This practice is quite popular among some pet owners, especially when the litter box needs to be cleaned frequently but cannot be done temporarily.

However, placing baking soda in cat litter also has some potential problems and hazards:

Chemical reaction: Baking soda is an alkaline substance, while the acidity and alkalinity of cat litter vary depending on the type. When the two are mixed, a chemical reaction may occur, releasing gases such as carbon dioxide. Although these gases are usually harmless to humans and pets, when their concentration is too high in a confined space, they may cause slight irritation to the pet's respiratory system.
Humidity increase: Baking soda has hygroscopicity and can absorb moisture from cat litter. This may cause cat litter to become damp, leading to the growth of bacteria and mold. The increase of these microorganisms increases the risk of cats contracting diseases and is also detrimental to the cleanliness and hygiene of cat litter boxes.
Operational complexity: Mixing baking soda with cat litter requires certain operational skills. If not handled properly, it may cause the odor in the litter box to become more severe and even affect the cat's normal excretion behavior.
Therefore, although baking soda can be placed in cat litter to have a deodorizing effect, it is recommended that pet owners pay attention to the following points when using it:

Moderate use: Do not add excessive baking soda to avoid unnecessary chemical reactions or increase the humidity of cat litter.
Regular cleaning: Regardless of whether baking soda is used or not, the litter box should be cleaned regularly to maintain its hygiene and dryness.
Observation reaction: After using baking soda, pay attention to the cat's reaction and the condition of the litter box. If any abnormal situation occurs, it should be adjusted or stopped in a timely manner.

If pet owners have high requirements for deodorizing cat litter boxes, they can also consider using specialized cat litter deodorizers or regularly changing the type of cat litter (such as mineral litter, tofu litter, etc.) to achieve better deodorizing effects.
